More than just a fashion show

Big performance needed against the Wee County

Westmeath footballers will be hoping it’s a case of third time lucky when they take the field against Louth in Croke Park this Saturday evening at 7pm. Louth came out on top when the sides met in the championship last summer and again in the first round of this year’s league campaign.

Promotion secured and bonus of silverware still on the cards

Finally something for Westmeath football folk to celebrate. Promotion back up to division two secured, thanks to a nail-biting win over Offaly, and a division three final in Croke Park on Saturday week to look forward to. After a slow start to the campaign the achievement is all the sweeter. Pat Flanagan and his team deserve credit for stopping the rot and getting us back to where I feel we ought to be, in the second tier.

Westmeath back to winning ways

It wasn’t pretty but that won’t worry Pat Flanagan and co as he finally saw his Westmeath side secure a win for the first time since 2008. They say winning is a habit. Well so too is losing and one which Westmeath had become far too fond of.

Tipperary to prove tough test for Lake County

Westmeath’s draw with Cavan last weekend may have ended their losing run which stretched to 15 consecutive league games but a much improved performance will be needed if we are to collect both points on offer in Semple Stadium on Sunday. With only a few minutes remaining Pat Flanagan’s men looked as though they were heading for a long overdue win, only for Cavan substitute Gearoid McKiernan to fire over a brace to secure the draw.

Six-pointer as Westmeath welcome Cavan to town

image preview

Westmeath’s eight point defeat away to Louth last weekend in the opening round of the National League has turned up the heat as they prepare to welcome Cavan to Cusack Park on Sunday. Hopes were high ahead of the trip to Louth that, even allowing for the difficult nature of the opening encounter, the losing run could be arrested. If we are to retain any hope of promotion a win on Sunday is a must.

The A-Z of the year that was 2010

A - Athlone GAA Club celebrated their 125th year in existence. It was an honour for me to be captain 50 years on from the first of the famous six-in-a-row wins. Unfortunately we added no silverware at senior level. Making the knockout stages was progress and hopes are high that we can build on that in 2011. Our u14s won the Feile and u16s won the county title indicating a bright future for the club.

Oulart prove too strong for never-say-die Raharney

Leinster SHC semi-final

Coolderry could be too hot for Raharney

Having captured this year’s senior hurling title in dramatic style at the expense of Clonkill, Raharney face a difficult challenge when they entertain Offaly champions Coolderry this Sunday.
